Vocal cord lesions are noncancerous growths that can form on one or both of your vocal cords. They are most often the result of overusing or misusing your voice.
Your vocal cords vibrate to make sound when you use your voice. Lesions can make this process difficult or painful, but our team at San Diego ENT is here to help you find the best treatment.
Symptoms of Vocal Cord Lesions
- Hoarseness
- Loss of voice or vocal range
- A voice that is raspy, scratchy or breaks easily
- Frequent coughing or throat clearing
Types of Vocal Cord Lesions
Nodules
These callus-like growths are the result of repeatedly misusing or overusing your voice.
Polyps
These are typically larger than nodules and can form after a single instance of misusing your voice. They can also occur because of smoking.
Cysts
A vocal cord cyst is a firm mass of tissue contained within a membrane. They are less common than nodules or polyps but can cause similar symptoms.
Diagnosing and Treating Vocal Cord Lesions
To diagnose a growth on the vocal cord, your doctor will review your medical history and complete a full physical exam, including a voice evaluation. An endoscope may be used to get a closer look at the vocal cords. This procedure involves inserting a thin, lighted instrument down your nose or throat.
Treatment for these growths depends on their size and age. Large or old growths may be removed surgically. Behavioral intervention, specifically learning good vocal hygiene to prevent further vocal abuse, is usually recommended for newer, smaller growths.
